American football
Football, referred to as American football
outside of the United States, is a highly physical sport based on
strategic field maneuvering. Football is based on certain elements
of rugby, but with varying contrasts in rules, field attire and
scoring. The object of this sport is to advance the game ball,
known as a football, down to the opposing team’s side of the field
and into their end of the field area, known as the “end zone”.
These end zones are 100 yards apart. The field is numbered every 10
yards with numbers 10 through 50, measuring outward from the middle
of the field.
Each team gets 4 attempts, known as “downs” to advance the football
at least 10 yards down the field. If they advance short of 10
yards, their next attempt is considered the 2nd down, then the 3rd
and finally the 4th. However if on any attempt a team surpasses 10
yards, the downs restart. The team then continues to advance the
ball towards the end zone of the opponent.
The ball is advanced by two methods of : running the ball, when a
player holding the ball or a player who is handed the ball runs as
far down the field as they can, and if the passed of the ball
throws the ball to a receiver. Upon successfully reaching the end
zone with the ball, the team scores a “touchdown”.
The end zones end with an upright, prong shaped structure known as
the goal post. Each touchdown is followed up an extra point kick.
The team’s kicker aims to kick the ball through the uprights in
order to add another point for the team’s score. If the team feels
they do not have the opportunity to score a touchdown but are close
enough in range to attempt a kick through the uprights, the team
may choose to go for a field goal which is only 3 points, compared
to a 6 point touchdown. Of course, Alabama is worth a trip, because here too
there are many sights.
